A world dependent on coal

Augustin Mouchot: The early years

Born in 1825 in France, Mouchot was a mathematician and teacher who dreamed of harnessing the sun’s power.

Influenced by physicist Claude Pouillet, Mouchot developed an interest in solar heating and its industrial applications.

The first solar energy collector

Mouchot designed a device using copper, black coatings, and mirrors to trap and concentrate solar heat.

Solar-powered steam engine

By 1866, Mouchot had built a solar-powered steam engine, converting sunlight into mechanical energy.

Napoleon III was impressed with Mouchot’s work and provided funding for further research in solar energy.
